We are all engineering professional
and I am sure that you have nice information about corrosion engineering, then
why we need to write and study this article? Â
Corrosion is like a poison for the
health of our machinery as it will kill the properties of engineering
materials or components after few time of working, if we have not taken the
precaution against corrosion.
One day my friend was talking about
one case of an accident in his organization and investigation carried out to
figure out the root cause of accident. Can you imagine, what was the root cause?
It was corrosion. I felt to start this discussion, based on the corrosion
engineering, because it will not only damage the service life of our component
but also in some cases it may harm the people also.
Also deal with Root Cause Analysis
This article will provide the basic
of corrosion engineering and engineering materials that may suffer from corrosion.
We will also study various problems due to corrosion in association with this article.
This article will also deals with the process to prevent the corrosion and also
the various engineering component failure due to the phenomena of corrosion.
So, let us come to the point
without wasting your time
We are selecting power plant for
studying the effect of corrosion and we will discuss the corrosion failure over
two important unit of power plant i.e. boiler and heat ex-changer and we will
study the corrosion effect, corrosion failure and reason behind corrosion and
other reason of failure of above two units (heat ex-changer and Boiler) also.
Introduction to corrosion
Corrosion is basically
the depreciation of materials due to electrochemical reactions with its
environment. Corrosion is occasionally also used to the deterioration of concrete,
plastics and wood, but we normally used corrosion for metals only.
Figure : Corrosion phenomena
Corrosion is basically a normal and also
a natural procedure. We must understand that corrosion could not be completely prevented,
but yes we can reduce the effect of corrosion i.e. corrosion could be reduced
or controlled by suitable selection of material, coatings, design and sometimes
by altering the environment. Different types of non-metallic and metallic
coatings are used regularly to assure the metal parts free from corrosion
effect.
Corrosion consist the reaction between a
metallic material and its environment and is a natural Procedure in a sense
that metal is trying to revert to the chemically combined state wherein it will
be almost always found in the earth’s crust.
Therefore corrosion is a process that might
be normally assumed to occur, it should not be regarded as impending, we must
understand that controlling and prevention of corrosion is quite possible by
different types of process that we will discuss very soon in this literature
review report on corrosion. Corrosion consist the various reactions and all
reactions causing the corrosion effect will be in the category of
electrochemical reactions.Â
So we could not avoid the corrosion to be present
but we can control the corrosion by controlling the reasons that produces the
corrosion so we may say corrosion controlling depends on the skills of the design
engineer because it is the section of corrosion prevention specialist.
The rusting effect on simple mild steel
is the best and most common type of corrosion effect and overall assembles to a
higher portion of the whole cost associated to corrosion.
We have seen various corrosion effects
over simple mild steel where the complete metal surface will be exposed and attacked
by electrochemical reactions and causing corrosion and such activity of corrosion
will lead the failure of the engineering component and will destroy the
complete machinery after little timeÂ
if care not given to reduce the effect of corrosion.
We will discuss few engineering
components that may suffer from corrosion and we will also study the failure
analysis of that engineering component that was basically caused due to
corrosion.
We will discuss in our next post about
the "live example of failure of engineering component due to corrosion".
