CONVEYOR BELT HOT SPLICING PROCEDURE

We have already discussed about the required tools, equipment and other resources to start the splicing procedure of a conveyor belt.

Today we will see here what the steps are and how we will have to go for splicing of conveyor belt. I have studied and searched about the standard maintenance procedure of conveyor belt hot splicing and finally today I am happy to write this post where we will see the procedure of hot splicing of conveyor belt step by step. 

I am very thankful to “REMA TIP TOP” as I have secured lots of information about hot splicing of conveyor belt by studying REMA TIP TOP hot splicing. I am writing this post to share my experiences about the conveyor belt splicing.

Let us understand the process of hot splicing of conveyor belt in detail and step by step.
Before starting to understand the steps of splicing procedure, there are few facts that must be considered for better reliability of hot splicing of conveyor belt.

Specification of hot splices

Step splicing techniques are normally preferred for better hot vulcanization of conveyor belt.
Bias cut should be 0.4 x B, where B is width of belt. Let us consider, if we have conveyor belt of having width of 1400 mm then we must have to take bias cut of dimension of 560 mm.

Direction of splicing step

Normally there are two direction of splicing step.
  • Splice runs with similar to conveyor running direction
  • Splice runs with opposite to conveyor running direction
For better reliability of hot splicing we must have to select the first option i.e. Splice should be run with similar to conveyor running direction as such splicing technique will provide better result in case of completely tensioned scrapers also while if we consider the second option , service life of belt joint will be reduced due to completely tensioned scrapers.


Let us see the steps that we will have to follow for a good and reliable hot splicing of a conveyor belt.

Selection of splicing site

Selection of splicing site is very important for easy hot vulcanization process; we must have to select the splicing site to a horizontal position as it is very difficult to carry out the splicing at inclined position. 

If we have inclined conveyor, we will have to select the splicing site at tail end side for smooth and easiness of hot splicing of conveyor belt. Hence select the splicing site at horizontal position.

Safety alert and work permission

Secure safety clearance from user and other concern department; Isolate the conveyor belt by using locked out system.

Positioning of take-up pulley

Raise the gravity take up (if we are using gravity take up) so that we will have option for providing suitable tension in conveyor belt after vulcanization process. Positioning of take-up pulley is very important as take-up moves during starting of conveyor belt and belt will also elongate after a time of operation hence belt should have option to withstand such movement. 

We will remove the slack in belt and we will use belt clamp to locate the belt ends at both side , so that we can concentrate over belt ends only.

Provide working platform

Remove idlers if necessary and provide working platform in such position that both end of conveyor belt may lie over platform in even position without tension in belt. Working platform should have access on both side (left and right side of working platform).

Secure belt ends

  1. Provide belt clamp at both end to secure the conveyor belt both ends. Both end of conveyor belt should be clean and fresh. We should not accept damaged end of belt for splicing. Hence check both end of conveyor belt.
  2. Check the area of overlapping of both end of belt, overlapping area must be equivalent to bias cut and splice length.

Prepare the belt ends

Secure the center line of belt ends. Check the width of conveyor belt of both end and mark the center point of width of conveyor belt. Secure the center line of belt end and both end of conveyor belt should be in same center line. Now one question will be in mind how to secure the center line of belt ends.

Let us understand how we will have to secure the center line of belt ends.

Mark the center point of width of each belt end, there must be at least 3 marking point at a specified distance approximate 150 mm in the length of conveyor belt end. 

Draw a connecting line of center point of belt end with the help of marking chalk or pencil. We will have one line that will indicate the center line of belt ends. We must ensure that center line, beyond splicing area, should not be invisible throughout the belt splicing operation.

Use one square ruler to draw the vertical line as shown in figure and this line will be called as square line from where splicing of belt will be start.
